Depression Starterpack Part 1 – Porn

Porn is one of those vices that most kids have to deal with at some point in their lives. But, unlike the magazines with the centerfolds, it has gotten to be videos, more graphic, and more widely available. Practically any non-Amish kid has access to it.

Porn creates a cognitive dissonance with real women

Porn is notably fake. Everything from the silicone, what women enjoy, their enthusiasm, and the seduction process is wrong. Guys who have a slow sex life and watch porn often will confuse the cartoon on the screen with the reality in the field.

On the off chance that they do get with a woman, they can come off creepy, or have unrealistic expectations in the sack.

Dopamine

You cannot have a proper understanding of what is happening in the brain without discussing dopamine. Dopamine is a hormone which is released when we experience intense emotions. such as shock, anxiety or guilt. Adrenaline junkies (guys that skydive, surf, etc.) are in fact dopamine junkies. Many addictive behaviors are attached to dopamine, porn is one of them. When a person uses porn, they will receive a rush of dopamine and will crave it again.

The problem is, if used too much, those dopamine rushes become harder and harder to achieve.  A person has become desensitized to whatever gave them the dopamine rush in the first place.

With the massive consumption of porn, it gets tougher and tougher for a guy to be turned on by images. He will go to greater and greater lengths to find that “right” picture of video. He will turn to increasingly kinkier and kinkier porn. What was considered “normal” is now soft, or boring. The porn addicted will be looking for aggressive, or even illegal images. Sometimes, this leads to behavior like Jared Fogle, the Subway pitchman who got into child porn, and then diddling with children himself.

ED and Viagra

Lately, there has been increased numbers of younger men who fail in sexual performance. Many turn to Viagra or other medications. The culprit typically is porn. When a person becomes desensitized to those dopamine hits, the sex drive, and libido also take a hit. Simply put, nothing is arousing anymore. This creates problems with women who have difficulties arousing her husband.  This will cause a less happy sex life, and result in tension within the marriage.

As a man in his early 40's, I grew up on a dairy farm in an irreligious home. Disgusted with the choice of women out there, I looked into religion to find a worthwhile mate. At 23, I joined the LDS (Mormon) faith, married, became a civil engineer, and now have six children. My favorite things are puppies, long walks on the beach, and the color blue (not really).
